Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is an aging problem in the retina at the back of the eye. This condition continues to be a
major area of research in ophthalmology. Genetic studies have revealed that in special cases of macular degeneration
there are definite genetic links. Epidemiologic studies have determined that people with blue eyes (light iris color)
and fair skin seem to be at a particularly high risk for developing age-related macular degeneration. We were
involved with the AREDS study at Johns Hopkins Hospital, which investigated the use of vitamin supplements to slow down
the progression of this condition. The results demonstrated that nutritional supplements can be beneficial in slowing down the progression of maacular degeneration in certain stages.
As with many conditions that are difficult to treat, some doctors claim to have "successful" treatments for
macular degeneration. Do not fall for these claims without first discussing such treatment with one of our doctors. We have seen
several of our patients over the past years undergo experimental or "new" laser or surgical treatments for macular degeneration,
with the result of worse vision. In Baltimore we have also witnessed patients who have been treated for macular degeneration
with costly vitamin shots and pills that have no scientific merit. We are very aware of many of the currently accepted and
not-so-accepted treatments for macular degeneration. We urge you to protect yourself from being misled and speak with us
before signing on for macular degeneration treatments.
